Groundwater Resource Sustainability in the Nabogo Basin of Ghana. Journal of African Earth Sciences 49 (2007) 61–70; Desert Research Institute; Lutz, A., Thomas J.M., Pholl, G. Mckay, A.W.

This professional paper, published in the Journal of African Earth Sciences, describes groundwater models created from data collected from the Nabogo Basin of Northern Ghana, within the intervention area of the Ghana Rural Water Project. The purpose of the project was to develop an understanding of groundwater sustainability under current aquifer conditions. Secondary objectives included: evaluating potential groundwater recharge and discharge rates, estimating source and quantity of groundwater, and ascertaining effects of current pumping on groundwater resources. A conceptual groundwater flow model and a steady state three dimensional flow model were created to represent the current aquifer conditions and allowed the researchers to make limited predictions of resource sustainability under various population change and/or drought scenarios.
