WAWI Governance

History of WAWI - Where WAWI Works - Goal and Objectives - Partners

WAWI is a partnership of 14 international bodies involved in community development with an additional agency acting in technical consulting capacity.

WAWI is not an individual partner activity. It is a multi-partner effort and should be viewed as such. The following governing system based on various levels of partner involvement is emerging.

WAWI Headquarters (HQ) Steering Committee
Focuses on Policy, Leadership and Direction
  Meets twice a year
Each partner sends 2 or 3 representatives
Has Working Groups on specific themes
Just had its 8th HQ Meeting in Oak Brook, Illinois, USA from October 26-27, 2006
WAWI Regional Program Review Meeting
Focuses on review of progress of program
  Meets once a year
All implementing partners in the three countries send delegates to the meeting.
Relies on each country’s National Steering Committee to address implementation issues.
Held its 4th Meeting in Bamako, Mali from May 16-19, 2006.
WAWI National Steering Committees
Each of the 3 WAWI countries has its National Steering Committee (NSC)
Formed to harmonize WAWI implementation activities and program progress in the respective WAWI countries.
Leadership of all implementing partners including government, collaborating partners form the NSC.
  Enhances partner life.
Some of the instruments NSCs work with include The WAWI Strategic Plan and The WAWI Framework of Objectives
Lead Agency

World Vision United States (WVUS) is designated Lead Agency for the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation (CNHF) grants. World Vision Ghana, World Vision Mali and World Vision Niger thus operate as local lead agencies in their respective countries.

WAWI Partners
Each WAWI partner is responsible legally for its own contract agreements

WAWI partners contribute in various ways to enhance partner life and ensure partner synergy.
The WAWI Secretariat
Was formed to Coordinate the affairs of WAWI. WVUS has been the primary support for the WAWI Secretariat in coordinating the WAWI activities.
The WAWI Secretariat supports the HQ Group, the Regional Group and the NSCs, to ensure coherent implementation of WAWI.

Some Secretariat functions are:

    Organize partner-wide events.
    Facilitate visioning and leadership
    Ensure accountability
Review and recommend partner concept papers and project proposals for funding by CNHF Board.
    Represent WAWI partners
Identify challenges to program and help partners in resolving them.
Lead the M&E, training and lessons learned activities on partnership basis
The Secretariat is the repository of WAWI documents, records and information
It provides general administrative and management support to the WAWI partnership.
The Secretariat mounted poster presentations at the 3rd and 4th WAWI
Regional Meetings in Maradi (Niger) and Bamako (Mali) respectively to highlight WAWI information
The WAWI Strategic Plan
This is a working document which will guide the conduct of WAWI business for the next five years.
The Strategic Plan was adopted April 22, 2006 at the 7th WAWI HQ meeting.
The WAWI Strategic Plan document was circulated to all participants at the 4th Regional Meeting in Bamako and its implementation discussed.
